With the new smart electric drive as smart fortwo, smart fortwo cabrio and smart forfour, smart is electrifying its entire fleet. These three locally emission-free models set the scene for a lasting, seismic shift in urban mobility, making the ride cleaner and quieter, while retaining unique customizability.
Discounting the few electrified hackney cabs built at the dawn of the 20th century, e-mobility is still a relatively recent field.
Yet smart, the brand that started testing electrified fleets in 2007 and released the first electric vehicle of all German car manufacturers in 2009, remains a clear pioneer when it comes to electricity-powered vehicles.
A tradition smart is happy to honor with further trailblazing milestones. The three new smart electric drive models make smart the first manufacturer to additionally electrify its entire internal combustion engine-powered portfolio.
Beyond the smart fortwo electric drive and, a premiere, the four-seated smart forfour electric drive, the company also launches the world’s first-ever electricity-powered convertible with the smart fortwo cabrio electric drive, allowing drivers to enjoy the smooth, silent handling even more – thanks to the model’s open roof.
Electrifying specs: record turning circle and sheer driving pleasure
Meanwhile, the handling and sheer driving pleasure of the electric models is just as unique and intense since they not only boast the nimble measures, but also the agility of their petrol-powered cousins.
Add the world-record turning circle of the smart fortwo – still unbeaten at 6.95 m – and the brand’s tried-and-tested flexibility when it comes to driving and parking in tight spaces, and you have a clear winner.
With their 60 kW electric engine and a reach of 160 km (for a smart fortwo electric drive), the new smart electric drive models have been tailored to urban driving conditions and sport a driving performance optimized for fast and clean urban mobility.
The new smart electric drive models also come with the new, powerful on-board-charger that, when plugged into a wall box or public charging station, nearly cuts charging times in half.
The charging process and many further functions like intelligent charging can be monitored and controlled via the custom “smart control” app.
“The even more perfect city car”
“The smart is already the perfect city car – and it gets even more perfect with the new electric drive,” explains smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler. “Together with many smart fans and enthusiastic drivers of the three previous generations, we are now looking forward to the one-of-a-kind driving pleasure the new smart electric drive has to offer.”
Even the standard configuration of the smart electric drive – a. o. with an additional instrument featuring a power meter and a battery level indicator – is more comprehensive than that of the matching petrol-powered smart models.
In terms of colors and extras, the smart electric drive allows for a maximum of customization. Take the electric drive design package, which paints the tridion safety cell and exterior mirror trim in an exclusive shade of electric green.

Thus, the new smart electric drive proves itself as a city cruiser with nearly unlimited potential. Well, this shouldn’t really come as a huge surprise – after all, smart originally started out as an electric vehicle concept.
And if the brand was ahead of its time back then, the fourth generation smart electric drive exhibits impeccable timing: The smart electric drive will be available as smart fortwo and smart forfour starting March 2017, and as smart fortwo cabrio in early summer of 2017.
