In the future, most people will live in cities. Yet there are many challenges associated with this scenario. With the smart urban pioneers idea contest, smart seeks and supports visionaries who want to make life in cities even more livable.

What’s the best use for empty buildings? How to network for neighborhood support 3.0? How can I share my car or cargo bike with others? And how do we go about turning even more spaces into blooming city gardens?

smart is all about intelligent solutions for urban challenges. With smart urban pioneers, smart seeks to actively help shape the future of the city.

smart seeks innovations and visions for the city, for its residents, and for even more urban joy. In this spirit, smart urban pioneers calls all bright minds, creative specialists, and intrepid tinkerers to become urban pioneers or to support other people’s visionary ideas. Together with smart magazine readers, smart urban pioneers accompanies the very best ideas from concept to implementation.

Here, smart not only serves as curator, but also provides direct and lasting support – a total of €50,000 will be made available to the winners to help realize their ideas. Over three phases, an expert jury of five as well as smart magazine readers select the very best of the submitted projects.

How it works

1.
On the hunt for ideas
2.
Voting for the best
3.
Funding the winners

The three staggered phases of smart urban pioneers ensure that all projects are thoroughly vetted and evaluated.

During the application phase, smart urban pioneers encourages all urban visionaries to submit their promising ideas, concepts, and projects. An expert jury of five pinpoints ten projects for the shortlist.

In phase two, these projects are then portrayed on smart magazine, where readers pick their three favorites.

Phase three: smart curates the top three submissions with crowdfunding campaigns on the international crowdfunding platform Indiegogo.

In addition to the crowdfunding campaign, smart supports the winners with a total of €50,000. The minds behind the top project receive €25,000, those in second place €15,000, and the third-ranked ones
€10,000 to realize their ideas.

Cabin Spacey - the micro house.

City:

Berlin, Germany.

Team:

Simon Becker and Andreas Rauch.

Challenge:

Cabin Spacey tackles the growing demand for premium quality, resource efficient, and highly flexible urban living space.

Solution:

The micro home is easy to transport, assemble, and hook up to existing infrastructures. It allows urbanites to turn urban wastelands, parking lots, and roof tops into new living spaces.

Suppliers and locations for the first installations have been finalized. The crowdfunding campaign will help to build the first prototype.

myLike - the social discovery app.

City:

Munich, Germany.

Team:

Uwe Hering, Steffen Schwarzer, Anja Wilbert and Marc Schallehn.

Challenge:

Cities offer endless scope and options. myLike encourages social networking and the discovery of new facets of the city.

Solution:

Users save their favorite places and share them with friends – or they start groups to swap recommendations with like-minded people.

Crowdfunding will allow the team to implement insights from the beta testing phase and fine-tune the app further. It will also support myLike’s official market launch.

Urban Affairs - the urban art festival.

City:

Berlin, Germany.

Team:

Jochen Küpper, Luisa Trautmann, Clara Stein and Robert Hummel.

Challenge:

With events held at three separate locations, this summer’s Berlin-based urban art festival wants to culturally reclaim urban spaces lost to the public and counter the gentrification trend.

Solution:

The program ranges from exhibitions and performances to readings, discussions, and workshops. Each of the three festival days is dedicated to a specific theme: city, space, people.

The locations and partners are already on board. Crowdfunding will support the festival’s realization.
