A city is a communal home for humans, and most people accept that a city has an untouchable, but real, soul. Rightly, we humanize the concept of the city. And it is clear to me that what illuminates the soul of a great city like Melbourne is the attitude of the very inhabitants that call this city home. The locals.
It is easy to define the illumination of a city in terms of architecture, culture, and arts, but without the free will of the people who eagerly build and create a harmonic, active, and vibrant city atmosphere, a city cannot thrive.
When viewing photos of Melbourne, outsiders see something unique and intriguing, but often cannot identify the city. To a Melbournian, however, these images are instantly recognizable. On the surface, it would appear to be a strange combination of authentic layered grit and ethereal touches that make Melbourne so attractive to photographers. But I would still posit that it is simply the people’s palpable love of their city that has turned Melbourne into a truly remarkable metropolis.
