1. What makes you happy in this city?

Local

All its folkloristic features, the fact that you can find something new and different every time you go out, and the warmth of most Mexicans make up the charm that many tourists love about this city.

Places where you can find things like small alleys with very old houses that have been here for a very long time, populated by families that have lived inside them since they were built. I love the aesthetic of those alleys when you photograph them.

2. WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN THIS CITY?

Local

Riding my bike and discovering all these random alleys with very old buildings and decorations everywhere; buildings filled with many years of tradition. Or abandoned buses turned into a canvas for street art.

Old neighborhoods, places that persist through time. I take inspiration from the people who work in these places and fight to keep them the way they are.

3. WHAT WORKS FOR YOU VERY WELL IN THE CITY?

Local

The weather is perfect. Also, it is great to be inspired by the city’s huge personality with its extremely colorful shops, fruit stands, people selling candies, walks through mercados where artisans sell their beautiful embroidery; all of these are always inspiring to photograph. And you can get anything at any time of the day!

The characters who populate it really catch my eye and I always feel the urge to photograph them. Mexico is full of characters and it would be foolish not to take advantage of photographing them to keep a record of them forever.

4. WHAT WOULD YOU DO BETTER?

Local

Mexico City is an extremely polluted city. On the sidewalk, there are many trees somehow transformed into trash cans, while the extreme number of vehicles creates a great amount of pollution. Your quality of life really goes down with the amount of time you have to spend inside them.

More cycling, less pollution. I would love to see all these corporate new buildings disappear, allowing the beautiful old ones to stand out. More green spaces, more lawns and parks to hang out and have picnics. The parks and green spaces in this city are all neglected and dirty. What’s more, I would really like to see more street art.

5. HOW WOULD YOU DO IT BETTER?

Local

People should stop using their cars and start to use other modes of transport instead, like cycling to work. This is starting to take off, but in a city this huge it is hard because of the sheer distances between places. But it is slowly changing to adapt to our needs.

I would like to encourage people to take more of an interest in our city and to be more caring. People should stop dropping their trash everywhere, stop using cars unless they really need to and start cycling more or using other modes of transport to cut down on traffic and pollution. Mexico City is a really big metropolis, so it is also very sad to see that most of its original architecture is being replaced by new buildings and huge highway flyovers everywhere.
