An autonomous and electric sharing car. A sporty anniversary model by smart BRABUS. And an interactive experience of e-mobility. At the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), smart showcases the full range of future urban mobility.
Some call it a “glass bead on wheels,” others a “robo taxi,” or something they can’t quite put their finger on: The new smart vision EQ fortwo is exceptional enough to require a brand new nomenclature.
The novel concept, introduced at this year’s IAA, is destined to revolutionize our perception of cars. It is fully autonomous, connected, and electric – with no pedals or steering wheel in sight.
Instead, several displays, screens, and light strips on the inside and exterior can display a huge spectrum of digital contents, from personal online profiles to the latest weather report.
In the city of the future, people simply use their smartphones to hail the nearest smart vision EQ like a taxi. And since an entire fleet, or “swarm,” of these models forms an intelligent networked system, the next one is bound to be just a block or two away.
smart BRABUS “15th anniversary edition”
To mark the 15th anniversary of their joint venture, smart and BRABUS also use the international motor show to introduce coupé und convertible versions of their striking smart BRABUS “15th anniversary edition.”
The most eye-catching aspect of this special edition: The bespoke paint finish of the car’s body panels and tridion safety cell in the aptly named anniversary silver colorway.
Deep black, high-gloss light alloy wheels and statement accents on the front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser, and roof-edge spoiler add sophisticated contrasts to the subtle silver finish.
Under the hood, two turbo-charged 66 kW (90 hp) or 80 kW (109 hp) gasoline engines guarantee excellent handling and performance. Alternatively, the coupe version of the “15th anniversary edition“ is also available with a 60 kW (81 hp) electric drive.
perfect equipment line plus voice control via Siri or Google Now
At smart, the new model year starts in fall with countless of optional extras. The most distinctive example: a new exterior finish in autumn brown.
The new equipment package named perfect in a sporty-sophisticated black and brown also comprises seats in leather look and fabric in black/brown with brown topstitching and air vents in grey. What’s more, new 15-inch alloy wheels in a 4-spoke design painted in black and with a high-sheen finish complete the arresting look.
The smart Audio-System (available in combination with the equipment lines) and smart Media-System now include voice-operated smartphone control with Siri (operating system iOS 6 and higher and Google Now (operating system Android 4.1 and higher).
Interactive e-mobility with the smart experienc-e app
The only automotive brand to offer its entire conventionally powered fleet as electric drive models also heads the way when it comes to digital innovations. The smart experience-e app offers users a virtual, three-dimensional, and extremely detailed tour of the electric smart fortwo electric drive, smart forfour electric drive, and smart cabrio electric drive models.
A 3-D model, a range simulator, and detailed explanations of many electric features facilitate intuitive exploration, providing anyone who thought e-mobility was complicated with playful access to this innovative technology.
At IAA, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, also announced a radical change for the future of powertrains. smart plans to be the world’s first automotive brand to switch entirely to electric powertrains by 2020 in Europe and North America, set to be followed soon after by the rest of the world.
Thus, as the first German manufacturer to launch an electric car in 2009, after debuting its electric test fleet in 2007, smart not only continues to write history, but also redefines clean and flexible urban mobility.
