Until then, the city has leased the area the size of a football field to local residents for their use. The land is currently being used as a BMX track, a playground and a communal garden. This form of temporary use benefits everyone: the city maintains control of the land and avoids vandalism, residents can use the space cheaply and without any legal requirements, and investors benefit from the general goodwill their project attracts as a consequence. Let’s hope more local politicians and land owners start seeing it this way.

This and more inspiring projects can be found in the print copy of A smart guide to Utopia or the ebook version.
