Although our cities surprise us with daily challenges, we tend to love them nevertheless. The smart roadshow is an expression of this love. And next weekend when it reaches Zurich, it will have reached the half-way point. So, it is high time for a quick review. And a view of things to come.
smart loves the city – and citizens love their city: Since late July, the smart roadshow has been taking its slogan “FOR loving the city” to fifteen European metropolises. Whether Hamburg or Rome, Berlin or Lisbon – smart treats these cities to a great blend of music, infotainment, and the manufacturer’s latest highlights, the new smart fortwo and smart forfour models. To reflect each city’s unique flair and features, the roadshow surprises guests with a bespoke program tailored around local heroes. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the musical highlights as well as join workshops, explore the smart survey results for their city, have fun in the photo booth, or get a hug from the hosts and hostesses. Meanwhile, future urbanites enjoy a fun mix of balloons, bubbles, table football, or games like memory. Offering the very first close-up glimpse of the new cars, these roadshows celebrate the cities and their people – together with the people.
Kicking off right in the heart of Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, the roadshow graced the German port in late July for a cool four days, flanked by acts like Miss Platnum and born and bred Hamburger Das Bo. Pure joy meets tricky beats in a local sound clash for landlubbers!
After this successful debut, the tour moved on to Berlin’s Sony Center to flaunt its futuristic set-up, attracting locals and tourists alike with the breath-taking acrobatic display of the ParkourONE team and stunning tape art by Berlin-based KlebeBande who transformed the grey pavement into a bright, bold, and beautiful vision of the future. On hand to provide the right soundtrack: Georg auf Lieder and Adesse, among others.
Those from Cologne are said to know how to party. Undeterred by light summer rain, they proved their reputation right and made the most of this skill at the city’s Neumarkt: Here, visitors enjoyed games of table football and bands like cat ballou and Miljö got the masses moving with heartfelt songs in the local dialect.
Leaving Germany behind, the new smart fortwo and forfour made their international tour debut in Vienna where they attracted plenty of interest at the city’s MuseumsQuartier (MQ) – the mirror sequins were especially accentuated thanks to the Viennese evening light. The smart roadshow was accompanied by newcomer talents GINGA and Anna F. A further draw at the arts-inspired location: the headphone-based silent disco.
Returning to Germany for a quick pit stop, the roadshow turned Frankfurt’s impressive skyline into the perfect backdrop for advanced urban mobility. Sign posts didn’t merely direct to the many different set-ups but showed the way to other attractions around the city. The Skyline Plaza hosted Sebastian Zoppi and Eurodance icon Snap! who whipped up a great party vibe.
Brussels, too, welcomed the smart roadshow and its multi-faceted entertainment schedule on the city’s Place Flagey where the show rivalled local draws like thick-cut fries and dainty chocolates with three distinctly themed days: Friday was all about performance art, Saturday turned the stage over to seminal Brussels event series “Anarchic” – who made the most of the occasion to celebrate their 10-year anniversary with DJ sets by a. o. Felix da Housecat and Matias Aguayo –, while Sunday remained reserved for the little ones with plenty of fun games like Connect 4.
Skirting the south of Germany, smart proved that the Bavarian capital of Munich has more than Oktoberfest bounties to offer. Right on the city’s central Odeon Square, acts like Herrenbesuch and “Bavarian Busta Rhymes” Liquid provided premium entertainment.
Well, we certainly had plenty of fun during this first leg of the roadshow and can’t wait for the upcoming stops, starting with Zurich this weekend – and a total of twelve Swiss artists including SKOR and Dabu Fantastic.
So, get out your calendars or fire up your apps to make sure you don’t miss out – join us at one of the events below for a chance to marvel at the new smart fortwo, the new smart forfour, our stage, the assembled acts, plus plenty of extras. Be our guest – let’s celebrate the city together!
