The project meets our yearning for nature and fresh, unadulterated food. Its contemporary set-up is controlled by smartphone, tablet, or PC, reducing the city farmer’s input and maintenance effort to almost nothing. Yet the system behind it all is highly effective. The combination of aqua or hydroponics and optimized growing conditions (incl. nutrient supply, temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration, and light) makes plants grow up to four times faster, while generating up to 50 percent higher yields. The obvious advantages of such a fully automated hothouse: fresh, organic food grown within reach of the consumer – hand-to-mouth, so to speak. And while this set-up goes from strength to strength, the five masterminds behind plants & machines are already tackling other projects: a lifestyle-oriented design indoor garden as well as larger growing systems for restaurants and supermarkets.
