Now, and for the very first time, the Green Club Index pilot targets the power consumption and environmental impact of clubs, discos, and music events. The campaign’s overriding aim: to help club promoters minimize their CO2 emissions and, ideally, save some money on the way. As part of June’s c/o Pop Festival, the first run of clubs recently received the campaign’s Green Club Label Award, among them Berlin’s SO 36 Berlin, the Kulturfabrik Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg, and Cologne’s own Gloria.
Any club interested in cutting its energy use can contact the Green Club Index for free information and a list of suitable energy consultants who can advise on related restructuring measures. Thanks to strong financial government support, any initial costs and outlays are quickly offset by the resulting savings. Cologne’s Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld, for example, managed to cut its power bill in half!
Initiated by the Green Music Initiative and the county’s NRW Energy Agency, the Green Club Index has already kick-started another set of pilots in Frankfurt and Mannheim with further in the planning for Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Switzerland.
Popular German DJ and producer Hans Nieswandt is one of the campaign’s vocal supporters. “Looking back, even the first ever discos were spaces where people would experiment with new, respectful forms of social encounters, support new trends in music or champion the latest techologies. So, the current move in modern club culture towards environmental measures simply follows in the footsteps of this tradition – and constitutes a vital necessity. It ensures that we can continue to feel at home in these magical places of spontaneously realised utopias – and do so for a long time to come.”
