They might be swift and short, but pack a surprising punch – just like everyone’s favorite micro and subcompact car. Join us for a round-up of ten stand-out smart TV and online spots that will leave you reeling.
10. No Backseats (2006)
Our first sample takes us straight to seedy underbelly of celluloid shockers: A string of grisly in-car murders – taken from cinema’s iconic scenes, think Mad Max, Film Noir, and B-movie splatter action – paint a visceral picture of the dangers of driving. Nasty surprises lurk in the backseat – yet smart takes the rear-guard action out of the action. A great example of why it takes more than a few creative murder weapons to outmaneuver a savvy smart driver.
9. A big idea for two (2011)
A moving idea for those on the move: Urban art in motion tells the touching story of two youngsters in love – and the pesky everyday interruptions that threaten to keep them apart. Their cupid and savior? Follow their story across walls, sidewalks and street corners to spot the sweet solution!
8. L. A. Design Challenge (2011)
Time for a blockbuster interlude: Everyday superheroes need everyday superhero transport, right? – or so this clip suggests. Trail intrepid journalist Annie Angle – still dreaming of that one big break – track a bunch of lost frame-knitting granny robots and watch the humble smart ascend to some dizzying heights, all thanks to a visionary smart 341 Parkour study that bowled over the L.A. Design Challenge jury.
7. Fits everywhere (2012)
Fancy a challenge? Well, we always knew that the smart was small and nimble. But this one really takes it to another level (literally). Picture the scene: The city of Belgrade, a residential building, 10 floors, 142 tenants. 6 hidden cameras, 1 elevator. And one car that fits everywhere. Just how did it get there …? smart fortwo at its best!
6. Offroad (2013)
Remember what your dad always told you? Make sure you have the right tools for the job. Short and sweet like the car itself, this 30-second clip perfectly distils what smart is all about. Well, we don’t want to spoil the fun for you: See for yourself, have a quick giggle – and enjoy the perfectly formed comparison at the end.
5. Guess the car (2014)
“Oh, I’m feeling something strange here.” This one leaves us totally in the dark – two people, no lights, one enclosed space. Guess the car is all about blackbox magic, so join our intrepid volunteers and blind testers on their tactile explorations: The results are a little saucy, fun – and quite revealing.
4. Dancing Traffic Light (2014)
Time to get (inter)active: A fantastic exercise in how to get people moving (in the car and on the streets), this sneaky project to improve street safety gets us into the groove with some clever motion sensing tech. We don’t want to give too much away, but the results are anything but pedestrian! For a little more info on the project, check out or feature here.
3. Big City Cars. Big nonsense? (2014)
“When we launched the first smart fortwo in 1998, it was a small car with a big idea …” Ever heard of “eco empathy”? A fab teaser for the new smart generation unleashed in 2014, this ad takes the concept of “thinking big” to its (il)logical conclusion: Why stay compact and agile if you can – literally – break boundaries (and possibly quite a few traffic rules) in urban transportation instead? Marvel at this hilariously spot-on corporate video spoof with its string of convincingly absurd examples for going all the way when it comes to size.
2. I skip leg day (2015)
Looking for a new exercise regime that wows the crowds? Strung up on your (skinny) hamstrings? Our top-heavy hunk might not have the largest glutes and calves – but the ladies sure love him … Switching from four wheels to two, this smart ebike teaser fuses Muscle Beach-style workouts with music video aesthetics for a cheesy, tongue-in-cheek homage to smooth, power-assisted rides. So, don’t fret if your body is no perfect, well-oiled machine (like the smart ebike) and find out why it’s more than okay to skip leg day!
1. Swearing Kids (2015)
This latest – and possibly greatest? – in a long list of clever smart commercials takes swearing to the next level. So, block your ears if you prefer your language all prim and proper – this one is not for the faint-hearted. Watch tiny tots unleash a torrent of expletives that aren’t exactly fit to print – or to be flaunted between crib, playpen, and child safety seat. But … who taught those innocent little angels to say all that? Enjoy the high-traffic reveal – and the equally high-octane cussing by a bunch of cute future drivers!
